More About This Ride
Ride Restrictions:
Minimum height restriction:   48 in.

Features:
Thunder Road is the only known coaster to be built over two different states (North Carolina and South Carolina).

History:
When the ride was rehabbed and reopened in 2008, the park reversed the trains on this side so that both sides of Thunder Road faced forward.

Thunder Road was one of the (if not the) first movie-themed roller coasters. It was originally themed around the movie of the same name and the park at one time had an actual moonshine still on site.

The coaster originally ran only 2 trains, but because they were so heavy they were removed from the coaster.

Although this ride is much like the ones at Paramount’s kings island and the one at Paramount’s kings dominion, I though it was much better. The layout is still the same but the one factor that set this ride apart from the others is the fact that this coaster was smooth. I don’t know what Carowinds is doing but they sure are doing a great job keeping their coasters in good shape.

It was ok. I diddn't think it was rough, just boring. Not very much air time.

Ha, I love the backwards side, it feels like the first drop never ends, what a great feeling.

The thing about this unique stateline-straddling coaster is how different of a ride experience you get. If you're looking for a great ride, go forward. If you're looking for a very high thrill value, do it backwards. I've always said that Carowinds has the best ride maintenance crew in the country, and this coaster is the best example. Smooth as can be for a coaster over 34 years old. Great out-and-back.
