More About This Park
Notes:
When the Disney corporation began making films and TV shows for adults - most notably Who Framed Roger Rabbit - they also set about devising a theme park to entertain adults as much as kids. Buying the rights to the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) oeuvre of films and TV shows, Disney acquired a vast repertoire of instantly familiar images to mold into shows and rides. Opening in 1990, Disney-MGM Studios served to mute the opening of Florida's Universal Studios, and at the same time found an extra use for the real film studios based here. The people you'll see laboring over storyboards aren't there for show, they really are making films.

There are more stage shows and tours than rides as such, though thrill-seekers will be more than happy with the delightfully sadistic Twilight Zone Tower of Terror , set in a haunted, cobweb-strewn hotel, or the new Rock & Roller Coaster , which, with a 2.8 second 0-60 mph launch, is Disney World's wildest ride. Star Tours , a flight-simulator trip piloted by Star Wars characters R2D2 and C-3PO, is toothless in comparison, and the Great Movie Ride , with actors and robotic figures re-creating scenes from classic Hollywood movies in an ersatz Mann's Chinese Theatre, is a tad disappointing.

Don't miss the half-hour Backstage Studio Tour , climaxing with the special-effects bonanza Catastrophe Canyon : the interest level fluctuates but you won't get your money's worth if you miss it. The same applies to Magic of Disney Animation , an enlightening trip through the animation studios, and Jim Henson's Muppet Vision 3D show - enormous fun, with some great surprises. Capping them off is the twice-nightly Fantasmic , a 25-minute special effects-laden show in which Mickey battles the products of his own imagination.

It's cool, fun. None of the disney parks are aimed at thrill seekers, they are just for the average familly. But, if you are a thrill seeker and your in Orlando, its most definitely worth the visit.

Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Rollercoaster, are the 2 rides you have to go on, but if you are around the park late, DEFINATELY see Fantasmic! The line getting into the stadium/theater can be pretty crazy but once you get inside the gates, it opens up more

What makes it a good park? All it 'really' has is TOT and RnRc...

Not the best park. To start off, there is less than 10 rides. The only semi good rides are Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Rollercoaster. Disney has absolutely no clue how to make a truly extreme park.

This park was okay...I haven't had a chance to go since they put in RnRc. Tower of Terror was okay. A neat idea but nothing more. There are plenty of other parks I'd rather go to.

The themeing like all of Disney's parks was great but it could use some more thrill rides and better rides. And like the other three parks it is talked up more than it deserves.

I love this park but it needs more rides. Not too many but a few more. Rock N RollerCoaster is so awesome! And so is Tower of Terror!

This is a great park, it just needs some work - less shows, more thrill rides, which they are working on anyway. Unlike Universal's Studios, the vision here is different - its supposed to put you into "The Hollywood that never was, but always will be." Meaning, when we think of Hollywood, this is the fantasy version that exists in all of our minds when we step into the Disney-MGM Studios. It does a great job at that. And three of the best attractions in the entire world in one spot - Tower of Terror, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, and Fantasmic!, makes this a must visit for any theme park veteran.

Does anyone realize this is a kids park (hello disney!) not a thrill seekers park?

Rock n Roller Coaster is a good coaster, except for the 0 to 60 launch at the beginning. I couldn't breathe from that for about 5 seconds! After that the coaster is awesome, especially the downward corkscrew!

Best Ride: Rock 'n' Roller Coaster

Disney's Hollywood Studios doesn't have very many rides and I'll get that out right away. Still it's a pretty good park for what it is thanks to some stand-out attractions.

Coasters- Well it should be coaster. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster (7 out of 10) was good from what I remember, but not great. I remember really liking the launch, but I don't remember too much about the rest of the ride.

Flat Rides- This whole category essentially is for Tower of Terror. Unfortunately I missed it on my last visit (still scared of drop towers), but I'll ride it next month when I'm there. From what I've heard, Tower of Terror is world-class.

Shows- I didn't see many last time, but I know they have a good selection like Indiana Jones, Fantasmic, and Lights Motor Action. I hope to see many of their shows next month.

Dark Rides- Star Tours was good and was a nice attraction. I wasn't the biggest fan of the Great Movie Ride though, but that was because I was too young to really know the movies in it. Toy Story Mania should really make the park's dark rides even better.

Food- The 50s Prime Time diner is increidble from what I remember. Their fried chicken is excellent. Just remember to eat your vegetables or face the consequences.

Atmosphere- Excellent as usual from a Disney park. The park really made me feel like I was part of the movies and it was very clean.

Also of note, the Backlot Tour is well worth hitting while there. It's a very long (30 minutes) but great tour.
