| More About This Park |
History:
Newhall Land and Farming Co. sold the park to Time Warner, Inc.'s theme park branch - Six Flags in 1979 for $51,000,000 - for only a $250,000 profit.
The park was one of the few featured in the 1977 movie "Rollercoaster". Revolution played a large role in the finale of the film.
Notes:
Eight separately themed areas with their own distinctive attractions - Baja Ridge, Cyclone Bay, The Movie District, Colossus County Fair, Six Flags Plaza, High Sierra Territory (includes Bugs Bunny World), Gotham City Backlot, and Samurai Summit. |

February, 2003
The Place: Six Flags Magic Mountain
Weather: moderate- cloudy, with temperatures in the 60's
Crowds: very light- especially for a holiday! Most of the rides were
walkons, at least for us, though I did see some lines in mid afternoon.
The People: me, my daughter Amber (age 7), and my son Joseph (aka, the
Chicken, age 6). My wife was sick, so was not able to join us.
The Purpose: To renew our season passes and have some fun.
Ratings: Because of who I was visiting with, I'm not going to grade each
coaster, per se, but you'll know what was good and what wasn't just from
reading.
Brief Warning: Look closely at the people- they're young and short!
Therefore, if you're looking for reports on Viper, Deja Vu, X,
Riddlers, or Batman, you won't find them in this TR, for very good
reasons. Usually I would catch them, especially if my wife was along,
but not today. And both of my kids were looking to hit some firsts for
them- my son finally being over the 48' mark and my daughter wanting to
hit a couple that she had missed in the past.
We arrived a few minutes before they opened the parking lot up at 9am,
were able to park in the first row, and hopped on the tram to the gate.
Through the metal detectors with a couple of friendly security people
(no, really, they were friendly) and off to the Will Call window to wait
for them to open. Lo and behold, they opened up at 9:30 instead of the
usual 10 (yea SFMM!), paid, then jogged over to processing, which was
also already open, and was in and out before they opened the main gates
into the park (yea again SFMM!) Very nice since I was worried about it
being a busy day and wanted to hit a couple of the notables before the
park got crowded.
The opened the gates, scanned our passes, and we were off around the
bend and to the right on our way to Goliath for my daughter's first ride
on it, and one she's been begging me for, as my son said "no way".
There was absolutely no wait this early, and we walked right onto the
train. We hopped in the second row of the second car while my son
headed over to experience Bench: The Ride while he waited.
GOLIATH didn't seem like it's usual self in some ways. Right out of the
station I noticed that our car had a vibration, which is extremely
unusual- my guess from a wheel starting to wear down. Not bad, but
enough to be noticeable. We climbed the hill, and my daughter began to
be a bit nervous, this being easily the biggest and fastest coaster
she's ever been on. We crest the hill and she starts screaming, so I
put my hand on her chest to reassure her as we plunge down and through
the tunnel. As we begin the rise up the second hill, her look of fear
begins to turn to a smile, and that turns to a look of pure pleasure as
we hit the airtime camelback. She's in love- still a bit scared, but
definately in love. Up and around to the midcourse, which is lightly
on, and then down into the bowl, running close to full tilt the whole
way. Not bad overall. It wasn't up to full speed- partially because of
the cool weather, partially because we hit it early, and partially
because they've slowed the lift to a crawl at the top and the midcourse.
But considering to that it shut down later on due to mechanical
difficulties and I don't think it ever reopened, we were happy. As she
put it, "that was cool. A bit scary, but I really liked it."
We then wandered over to the Circus Wheel (tilt a whirl) and took a
spin, but got stuck after about 4 good whirls. I really wish they
allowed the ops to vary the speed of the turning, as we got a bummer of
a ride due to being stuck on one speed. Oh well. Sandblasters (bumper
cars) was still closed, and the cars looked like there was work being
done on them, but I couldn't see any sign of the floor being torn up or
other work being done. We then headed over to Gold Rusher, SFMM's first
coaster and a pretty typical Arrow mine train with only 2 lifts.
However my son hadn't experienced it before, thinking it was scary, so
off we went. Halfway through he decided it was the greatest thing since
sliced bread, and I was finally able to convince him to let us move on
after 4 consecutive rides without having the leave our seats since there
was no one in the station.
Next was the long hike up the hill to head to one of their favorites-
Ninja (closed, but more on that later). Since that wasn't open, we
moved over to Superman. Joseph had been saying he was going to ride,
but decided not to (with a 5 year old waving at him from on the ride),
so it was just me and Amber.
SUPERMAN only had the right side open, as it has been for months now
since hearing that they blew out the left side. However I had heard
that they had finished the work on the left side and it was open again.
Not today, and no sign of it being open. And the right doesn't fire
anywhere near like it used to. Definately not hitting 100mph, and it
was hitting about 5 support sections from the top, instead of the 2-3
that it used to do. Sad, since it's so oviously in need of major work.
Nevertheless, Amber loved it, and it became her favorite ride in the
park except for Spin Out (which was also closed today). Especially when
I showed her the floating penny trick.
We then headed back down the other side of the mountain to the entrance
area via the Orient Express (Funicular), made a brief stop to put our
coats in the lockers, and headed over to Revolution for Joseph's first
spin while we found a riding partner for Amber so she wouldn't have to
be by herself.
REVOLUTION was pretty much it's same old self, running well for the
abuse it's been given over the years without the long overdue rehab and
those needless, horrible otsr's (stupid CA insurance companies) But
since they're short, the otsr's didn't bother Amber and Joseph at all,
with him quickly deciding that this was his favorite coaster ("going
upside down is soooo cool!") For what it's worth, the brakes were on
very light- when they were on at all, and we were able to get several
walk on rides with ease. And the head
Then just for fun I took a look at X's line, which at this point (near
noon) looked like it was probably around the 2-3 hour mark, but that was
from a glance at the end of the bridge, so my time estimate there could
be off by quite a bit. Wandering past the open Roaring Rapids (to cold)
and Deja Vu (45 - 60 minute line, and no kids), my daughter asked, so I
bit the bullet and we got in line for Psyclone. Walking on to the
second seat second car, my son once again opted for Bench: The Ride, and
my envy followed him while I was stuck.
PSYCLONE is still one of the biggest piles of junk I've ever experienced
in my life. From the wretched B&M trains (anyone who says they're
perfect have never riden in these coffins), to the incredible jerking,
banging, and smashing throughout the whole ride- including in the little
drop and turn around to the lift. How someone can make a coaster so
wrong is beyond me, and at this point with all the constant work I see
them do on this, I've given up hope. Scrap the pile of junk, burn the
lumber and smash the cars they way they've been begging to, and get rid
of this.
Or, to quote my daughter, who sums it up oh so well, "I hate that ride.
It shakes you to much. It sucks" (which is a really bad word coming
from her!)
I then managed to coerce both kids into a ride on Jet Streamer, er, I
mean Arrowhead Splashdown (yea right), which was probably one of the
wettest rides I've ever had on it. We all came off at least a bit damp,
and Amber was dripping. So to dry off we took a few more rounds on Gold
Rusher, only having to walk around once when someone was actually lined
up for our seats in the back. We looked at Free Fall (Intamin first gen
drop), but both decided that was a bit much for them still. We then
walked past the closed Scrambler, watched Riddlers and Batman go through
their paces, and let Amber take a spin on the Grinder Gearworks
(roundup) while I looked at the torn apart Atom Smasher (Himalaya).
They've got all the cars removed on AS, but the track is still there,
and there was definately work going on. But at least it doesn't look
like it's being removed. But still, another one of their few flats in
the park closed- definately a problem for them.

Part 2 of the Feb. 2003 trip:
Afterwards we took spins on the Swashbuckler (YoYo) and Buccaneer
(Pirate Ship), then played around for a while in Bugs Bunny World (hey,
they are kids, remember!) It was nice to see Elmer's Baloon Races
(Zamperla Baloon Race) back in action, as it was completely gone for a
while, as was Knott's, and I was starting to wonder if all of them were
disappearing. Nice to know I was worrying over nothing (not
surprising). While there, we noticed that Flashback was also running,
and Amber asked, so once again I bit my tongue and envied my son who
chose Bench: The Ride (oh how I wish I could take that one for once!)
FLASHBACK didn't show any signs of them having been working on it (the
rumored reason it was down for so long), giving me 2 or three headshots
into the hard otsr's on every single twist and dive. It's still rough,
painful, shakes even on straight track, and left me feeling woozy and
with a headache when I got off from all the pounding on my temple. I
think that everyone on the train complained about the same thing with
one exception- Amber, who is short enough that the top of her head
didn't even really reach the otsr, thus saving her the bashing. She
enjoyed it- a little bit- and didn't think it was that bad. Which
helped to support my theory that perhaps this would be a decent ride
without the otsr's. However, sitting hidden in an unused part of the
park, where they could easily put in 3 flats between the space Flashback
takes up and the open and vacant areas around it, give me 3 new flats or
something else. Anything else. Please!!!
A few more kids rides, followed by a couple more walk on rounds on
Revolution then led us to go back up the hill and check out Ninja again
to see if it had opened- and lo and behold, there's people in line and
she's running! The kids are happy, so off we go to my favorite
suspended coaster:
NINJA had been down for a couple of weeks apparently due to some major
work they were doing on it or it's trains. In any case, this was the
first time I've EVER seen them running only one train on Ninja instead
of the usual 2 or 3. While we were lucky and only waited 15 minutes
(our only real wait of the day), the line very quickly doubled in length
behind us. That led me to believe that we must have gotten there fairly
shortly after they had opened it. Well, that along with the heavy staff
(5 or 6 ops and a maintanance man popping in and out) and some of them
at a couple points pointing to something on the right side of the train
as it was leaving the station (no clue, since I was on the other side of
the train at the time). However, it ran as great as it usually does,
giving a fun, whipping ride through the trees and down to the water over
Jet Strea... er, Arrowhead Spla..ahh, whatever it is. Always fun when
you see grown women scream in surprise and a bit of fear, and a good
sign from a good coaster. Now if only they'd sandblast and paint the track.
After that it was back down the hill, picking up a bit of cotton candy,
look at our pictures, and heading out for the day. Not bad to get all
that done by 4:00 on a holiday. Not bad at all
NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS
SCREAM is coming along nicely. We watched them put up most of the first
drop throughout the day, stopping at what looked to be one section short
of the pullout. It's much closer to the interior of the park than I
imagined it to be, for some reason, and won't require a long entrance
from the Colossus County Fair to get to. It's brake run and station
area are easily visible just through the trees, and it's looking like
it'll be a fun ride.
COLOSSUS is still walled off for the Scream construction as well as them
doing some other work over there, though I couldn't tell what. I'd wish
that it was a long overdue overhaul and rehab that it needs so badly,
along with new trains, but sadly I'm not that optimistic.
As we were leaving at 4pm (2 hours before the park closed), it looked
like the line for X was 1/2 way up the steps leading out of the station
on the access road side. However I couldn't see the actual queue area,
so it's possible that they were cutting off the line on the other side
and only letting a few people in. But if they weren't doing that, then
evenings look like a good time to try to catch X if you don't want a
long line.
Also, the park looked especially clean today. I think I only saw a bit
of litter once today. And the employees were also quite friendly, with
me having conversations with several of them.
And the monorail and observation tower were still closed, with no sign
of them opening anytime soon (big surprise). To bad, as I'd love to see
them get both of these open.
Lastly I spent a good portion of the day daydreaming about SFMM actually
fulfilling their biggest needs, and noticed several spots where there is
room for flats. I've already mentioned the Flashback area that could
probably take 2, and definately 1, even if they don't move it. There's
also the old sites of El Bumpo as well as the old Dragon station at the
bottom of the hill, the old Crazy Barrels site (the station and framing
is still there, though a bit hidden), over near the entrance to the X
bridge, and with a little work it would probably be possible to put one
near the sky tower, and maybe even another up on the summit, along with
a couple of other places. But then reality kicks in and I remember that
for some reason SFMM seems to have decided that flats are a waste of
time anymore, which is really sad. Ahh, but a guy can dream.
In any case overall it was a fun day, and we'll definately be back
several times thoughout the year. If you've got this far, then thanks
for reading and I hope that you got something out of it. :)

TR: Scream!'s Media Day
Finally feeling well enough that I thought I'd go ahead and try to type
this up. Especially for all those who have never been to a Media Day at
a park and think that they're tons of fun and great for ERT ;-)
The Place- Six Flags Magic Mountain
The Occaision- Media Day for Scream!
Weather- absolutely perfect- clear and warm
My condition- sick and drugged up, but there anyways (stupid me, I'd pay
for it later)
Woke up that morning at 6am after being sick the day before. Got up,
looked around, and told my wife, "no way, I'm to sick". Staggered
around, got some medicine and went back to sleep. Woke up at 6:30
feeling better, enough so that I thought I could stagger my way through
the day. Rushed through, got the kids up and dressed and me cleaned up,
and we were out the door at 6:50 to drop the kids off at the sitter, my
wife at work, and to hit the road to the park.
I arrived at around 8:15 or so, knowing that I'd missed the early few
rides by a few minutes. I had received an email a few days ago saying
if we could be there by 7:30 and get our faces painted, we could ride
between 8 and 9 for some publicity shots. However, I was late, so
figured I'd get to skip the face painting which I didn't really want to
do.
Parking in the employee lot (free!) and walking over the check in table,
I was given a green wristband indicating my status as a "riding guest/
ACE". (Media from tv, radio, web, etc got red bands), walked past a
small refreshment table (free rolls, water, and canned sodas) and to the
gate into Scream's entry plaza where I was greeting by a series of
balloon towers and a sign directing me "Face Painting- Mandatory
<-----". Oh well. So I got in line and proceeded to be sprayed
(cold!) with a base of pink and blue and black highlights added.
Emerging looking like some freak who lost a fight, I'm sure, I tried to
put on my best happy face for the occaision, since that was I was there
for, and walked through the entry queue to the coaster (noting that it's
a very short entry queue). Got to the base of the steps leading to the
station where a few others were waiting and was told we had to wait
there and that they had just taken a group upstairs. We might get to go
up in a bit for "prerides", and that the events would kick off at 10am.
So we waited, and talked. Ran into Tom Zelff from No Limits, who I'd
been trying to hook up with for a while, and we talked. And waited.
And talked. Finally around 9:40, while we're still standing and
watching media and a lucky few ride the one operating train several
times one of the PR reps counted off 32 of us to go up and fill the
first "official" train to go during the ceremonies. Yeah, lucky me I'm
one of the 32. Before we get to go up a few minutes later, they reduce
the number to 24, but I still made the cut. Feeling a little better
cause my hopes were up, we made our way upstairs where Tom, his friend
from Twistedrails.com, and I buckled into the 3rd row (First was
cameras, second was Paul Ruben, Jodi our ACE rep, and 2 others in green
Discovery Channel Challenge t-shirts). Buckled in and ready to go, til
someone steps up- "What about the contest winners?" "They should be in
row 3." My row. So they released our restraints, said sorry, we said
no problem and walked out of the station and downstairs to join the
crowd at the announcing platform.
Was I upset? No. A little disappointed, yes, but I also realize that
this is the norm for Media Days and it really didn't bother me that
much. It's one of the things you have to come prepared for, and it
wasn't the last time I was kicked off the train that day for a media person.
So we made our way down to the platform, where we screamed and yelled
and tryed to make it look exciting for SFMM since that's why they have
us there. Met up with Eric (EBL) and his wife from Westcoaster there to
and hung around with them for a little bit. There's a webcast of it
around somewhere still, but I'm to tired to try and look it up. I'm
sure someone can provide the link for the ceremony and "first ride".
After that it was inline and up into the station again to wait to
finally actually a real ride in. It was about 10:30, and between that
time and 12:30 or so I got in 4 or 5 rides, basically taking whatever
line was shortest. At this point they were running two trains, with the
entire front row closed on one for cameras and it's second row for
personalities for those cameras, and one front seat of the second train
taken up by a camera. Those brave enough to wait for the front waited
over an hour for it- with only about 10-15 people in front of them.
Lots of downtime waiting for cameras to be reset, live feeds for
newscasts, tapings, and various other deals, including one point where I
sat on a train for over 20 minutes one time waiting for something (never
found out what)- again, all very normal for a media day and nothing
unexpected at all.
Took a break at one point with some free water they were handing out
from a cart and did a brief interview with a newspaper reporter (didn't
catch which one) and a radio reporter who taped me, Eric, and his wife.
Took another ride, but I could tell I was rapidly washing out so I made
my way up the "Colossus Cookery- Eat Out Loud" (yes, that is seriously
what it is now called) and had a free burger, fries, and coke since it
was only open to those there for media day. I knew something was
definitely wrong with me when I thought the burger and fries tasted
pretty good. :)
I then thought I'd take a walk around the park and see what lines were
like and maybe take a few rides. Here's where I think I did myself in
more than anything else. I got a ride on Jet Streamer, but I was
passing up 15 minute lines because I didn't feel up to waiting that
long. Finally got smart, came back to the Scream area, got a Sprite and
sat for a bit to get some strength up, took a water to go and headed
out. I could have stayed all day, but as it was it was around 1:30-2
when I left. They had quit running the ride for the day at 1pm anyways
due to a slightly smaller group of media than might normally be there
(something about a war or some other silliness) and most of the riders
had evaporated by that point anyways to enjoy the rest of the park. By
the time I got home at 3:30, it was also obvious health-wise that I
should have stayed in bed, where I ended up spending the next few days.
Hope I didn't pass this stuff on to anyone in my stupidity there.
Overall impressions for the day- Lots of standing around and waiting,
with an occaisional ride mixed in, and always having to smile for the
cameras and media people and talk up the ride. In other words, a very
normal and completely expected media day. There's moments of fun
involved, and it's great to be able to ride the coaster "before" it's
open. And the free food and drink is really nice. But the truth is
Media Day's are work- you're there to perform for the cameras and
microphones. And I have no problems at all doing that, unlike a few
that apparently threw a well observed and known tizzy earlier in the day
over the face paint. Personally I was happy for the priviledge to the
do the parks bidding and try to make them look good- especially since
that was the only reason they let me be there and why they were giving
me the free food, drink, etc. :-)
As for Scream itself, it's a fun coaster. I LOVE the Zero-G roll,
probably my favorite inversion. The rest is standard B&M goodness.
There was a little vibration- notable especially in one ride I took in
the third row right outside seat, but hopefully that'll work itself out.
But the ride is spiced with shots of air in small does throughout,
which was a nice surprise. A good addition for the park and one that
will hopefully liven up an otherwise quiet part of the park in the future.
There's my look at a Media Day. Hope you enjoyed it. :)

Only went there a few times since it was two hours north of San Gabriel Valley where I grew up.
First time I went on Collosus. I had never been so scared!
Revolution is a classic ride and alot of fun.
The water rides are good too. So much has changed there over the years that names of rides have changed and or removed, I leave my comment short.

Six Flags magic Mountain is NOT overrated. X is one of the greatest rides there is, along with Goliath, Riddlers, DejaVu, Batman, and viper.
Some of you need to stop complaining about this park and stop being bias about your parks

SFMM is definately a favorite of my mine. I live in Los Angeles, so I'm pretty close to Disneyland and Knott's, too... But, I prefer Magic Mountain. Their rides are paralleled by none, and the thrills continue to roll in! Can't wait till the next ride! ALSO, can't wait to go to Cedar Point and Geauga Lake next summer!

I went to the Mountain for the first time in 1994, and was totally captivated by it. The setting for this place is just simply unlike anyother. Viper, and Revolution are among my favorite steel coasters. Batman is too common to get praise at just this particular park, but all the installations are fantasic rides. I appreciate Colossus for what it is, but the reprofiling has taken away some of it's spunk. I still need to ride Riddler, Scream! and X, but I hear great things about them, and of course with Tatsu on the way, Magic Mountain's coaster collection is my favorite by far. The view of the park from the highway is breathtaking as well!

I went to Six Flags Magic Mountain on Saturday July 1st, 2006! It was awesome. After we left california, I felt so bad that we were leaving because it was so much fun and because I didn't get to ride Six Coasters
The Coasters I did NOT get to ride are the following:
X - LOONG Line
Tatsu - VERY LOONG Line
Revolution - Just didn't get to it and line was sorta Eh
Superman: The Escape - "broke down" for supposedly an hour, and as soon as i went down the hill, it was working again. wtf
Colossus - Didn't feel like it really [ I spent too much time on Scream]
Flashback - Closed = Need I say More?
The people who came with me were
:My 17 year old female cousin [practically like my sister]
My Mom & Dad
My 10 year old brother [who can't handle the "big" coasters yet
My mom's friend's 22 year old daughter [also a close friend of mine]
I was the biggest thrill fanatic in the family. My cousin can handle most of the things but she claims things are "unsafe". yeah whatever
My mom doesn't like heights [so basically no ride was good for her]
my dad gets motion sickness [ he was green after grinder gearworks]
my moms friends daughter doesn't like squat. haha
so the order i went on everything goes as follows
Viper-since it was our first time, and we didn't know how to get to X, we just got to Viper and got a pretty good place in line. it was a lot better than i thought it was gonna be
Roaring Rapids- My cousin really wanted to and i think it was good we did because it was hot and the line was short
Deja Vu - My cuz backed out when she saw this one so I rode solo on this one. The seating system is terrible on Deja Vu. If you are a single rider, you stay on the platform FOREVER. The guy doesn' t even send you to an empty seat andp people always lie where they sit. So finally some kid asked me If i wanted to sit next to him. Judging on what people say about Deja Vu breaking down and all, I was fortunate enough for It not to break down on me. { i heard a few days ago it broke down 7 times]
Psyclone - Since it was right there. WOW, I should have listened to everyone who said this ride is a chiropracter's dream. Rought ass ride.
Ninja - Pretty amusing ride. Not too long but decent. It broke down later in the day for a little bit but it was right back up.
Jet Stream - Not as wet [or even close] to roaring rapids. I saw noticed the double water fall and then i remembered someone telling me about how it used to be a dual track.
after jet streamwe met up with the rest of the group. we had a decent lunch at panda express and then we were off again. My brother told me about the few rides he went on and the fun he had. He asked me to go on Sierra Twist with him so I did. Twice.
After Sierra Twist, we walked up to Jet Stream because the girls wanted to take a ride.
After a 30 minute wait for them, we found Goldrusher. My brother, and the others who went on it, enjoyed it so much we had to go again.
After goldrusher, I wanted to Hit The Riddler's Revenge. I used my first Flashpass on it. It apparently broke down when i was in line because someone threw up i think. after that it appeared to have "minor technical problems" most of the ppl in the flashpass line left. as soon as i left the exit, i saw a train going up the lift, I ran back but i was at the back of the flashpass line now. then someone said it broke down again and 70 percent of the line left, but i stayed, and then they said NEVER MIND itsn ot broken. the people in front of me went on but i was held back. so i was the first person in line then. I took the back left seat. This was a pretty awesome ride. It hurt your legs a bit, but then again this was my first stand up coaster.
Next We walked to Goliath. Apparently it was broken down but as we walked towards it it was testing. I used my next flashpass on it. I don't know why they were only running one train, but it seemed like forever. It could have gone a lot faster with 2 or 3 trains. Goliath was crazy with the positive G's but still fun.
afterwards the group wanted to go home, by my mom's friends daughter stayed with me till 10:30. So next we wanted to see how long the X line was, we decided we'd go there at the end. We watched the Chinese Acrobats and they were pretty good. After the acrobats, we walked down the path to Scream. Out of all the coasters I was on, Scream was probably my favorite. After Scream, we walked towards Batman. The wait was about and hour and 15 minutes but we stayed. Since she is terrified of coasters, she kept me company in line and thenn left at the exit. We met some nice australian people too. Batman was also running on one train only. After Batman, we walked with the australians up to Superman the Escape where it was announced "broken Down" for an hour. We told the people goodbye and went down to papa johns for dinner. mmm. after papa johns, we went down to X and the line was basically 3 hours long, i decided i would go next time i came to six flags. we walked back to Colossus County Fair and I went on Scream! 3 more times. I ended my day and experience on Scream. Now it is July 21st. Tomorrow we leave for California again and we are staying one week. While there I might go there again, and If I do, I will try to get in the rides I missed last time. Last time I also didn't get to use my other two flashpass tickets...not that I needed them. And this time, If we go, we'll be going on a weekday. Thanks for reading my long boring review. haha.
